They didn't stand a chance. They were literally sitting ducks. Neither Ward or Parker were carrying weapons.
News reporters and crew members put their lives in danger every day. They are in the middle of riots, confrontations... just because of the nature of their public profiles, they are targets themselves for deranged gunmen.
Virginia has fairly liberal concealed carry laws. There are hundreds of sources from which one can get basic through advanced training in gun handling and self defense. Sidearms are available to fit every physical characteristic and limitation.
In short, there's no reason why these two victims could not have been carrying a sidearm. If either one of them had been doing so, they would have at least had a chance to survive. But, as it was, their lives were tragically lost long before the first cop arrived.
