THE DAY ROBIN WILLIAMS SAVED AMERICA

SPECIAL POST

Comedian-actor Robin Williams passed away on Monday, August 11th.  The world spread like wildfire; within minutes, perhaps seconds, every television network in America was broadcasting the news and within the hour they were all carrying stories reminiscing about the good old days of his comedic routines.  I even think they preempted an Obama speech; they're likely to go to hell in a hand-basket over that).  Shame on them.

Immediately, the world was saved.  The Ukranian problem disappeared, as did I.S.I.S., Israel-Hamas, North Korea, Iran's nuclear program, the economy, the border, the I.R.S. emails... everything just went "POOF!" and evaporated into thin air.  The only things on the airwaves for at least 24 hours were Robin Williams, cuts from some of his gigs, talking heads of psychoanalysis and speculations about whether or not drugs and depression combined to do him in.

Over here on Mount Burney, it rained like a twofer, (that's like two cows peeing on a flat rock).  The welcome moisture dampened the remnants of three nearby forest fires that had threatened to burn everyone out just a few days before.  So, between Williams and the twofer, everything else in the world ceased to exist... and America was saved, at least for the day.

Thanks, Robin.  You were truly a good guy, even in death.

That's MY AMERICAN OPINION, respectfully submitted.

IN MEMORIAM: GAGE SEALANDER

Young and innocent, an eleven-year-old boy made a dumb move and turned the small town of Burney, California, upside down.  He was tooling along on his skateboard on the main street of town and ran into the side of an 18-wheeler.  Two physical objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time.  I could say the 18-wheeler won and the lad lost, but the driver of the 18-wheeler is also a loser.  I cannot imagine his agony.

Gage Sealander did have a chance.  He didn't need to be there on Main Street riding his skateboard in evening traffic.  He didn't have to plow into the side of an 18-wheeler, but he did.  Did he know better?  Knowing his parents, I'm sure he did.

A couple of years ago, I came off of Main Street into the parking lot of the VFW Hall and almost ran over two young boys on skateboards.  One was Gage's friend and the other one could have been Gage, I do not know.  But, I stopped and told them if they were going to ride their skateboards, to stay off of driveways and entryways.  Traffic comes off the highway at 30 miles an hour, sometimes more.  They both continued to skateboard around town, but I never saw them in that driveway again.

Kids at that age don't absorb lessons from adults unless they are repeated, repeated and repeated.  And that's my lesson here.  Kids at that age are still young, innocent and exploring their territorial bounds.  We have to be after them constantly, in a loving way of course, but we cannot let our guards down for even one split second... because that's all it takes for tragedy to strike.

I don't blame the parents; I don't blame the truck driver; I don't blame the kid.  What a tragic ending to a beautiful spring day.

That's MY AMERICAN OPINION, respectfully submitted.

IT'S DAMNED WELL TIME TO TELL THE TRUTH

We're so intent on couching our words these days, so afraid that someone will yell back at us for saying what is on our minds, that we have become an endangered species! We fear that, if we say what we think, if we stand up and put our opinions on the table, those who disagree will most certainly slay us after submitting us to days and weeks of torture on the rack.

These days, particularly in Washington, there are those who will do just that to us! They will do it to us because they know that we have become, at their insistence, a nation of spineless cowards who have forgotten that sticks and stones may break our bones, but words can never hurt us. By the creation of this atmosphere of fear, this modern-day almost-Constitutional requirement for "political correctness," they have assumed a power over us, a control that, in fact, we cannot break until do speak out.

One never learns anything unless they ask questions. "Why?" is a favorite one that comes to mind. "Why is it that this economic tactic you are trying with our money is going to work this time when it has never worked before in the history of mankind?"

To such a question, reasonable men and women would enter into a dialogue and you would discuss viewpoints, history, facts, and economic theory, and in this process you would undoubtedly come to some consensus; some would learn, some would teach, some minds would be changed and the end result would undoubtedly be better. Only those who don't want you to know the answer, only those who have hidden agendas, only those who seek to exercise total and unchallenged control... would deny you an answer to such a question.

We are not to blame for telling the truth, asking questions or expressing our opinions. Those who believe otherwise are nothing more than Satans in our midst.

In honor of a great American, Paul Harvey, we need to start exercising our freedom of speech and thought. And, we need to start today.

WHO PAID FOR THE PLANE FLIGHT?

Here I sit, hangin' around the bar at the Nugget Casino in beautiful downtown Searchlight, Nevada, waitin' fer good ol' Harry to come back from Washington fer the holiday, and wonderin' who paid for that jet plane that flew that Senator Brown from his family funeral back to D.C. and then back to the funeral in Ohio so he could vote "Yes" on that stimulus thing.

Oh, Congress didn't do it? What a relief! Huh? The White House provided the plane?

Whaddya mean I should dummy up and have another beer?

I'd say this was MY AMERICAN OPINION, respectfully submitted, but I hear that Americans can't HAVE opinions any more....
