We can all remember “The Force” as described in the Star Wars episodes, a mysterious power permeating the universe that, once harnessed, could be used for good or evil. Darth Vader, of course, used it for “The Dark Side.” There have been those amateur and professional “theologians” who profess that such a force exists, that there is an unseen and untapped energy that is universal and that emanates directly from God.
Perhaps that is true. There is a multitude of events that have occurred throughout history that could be best explained by the existence of something beyond our scope of imagination. But, if so, what is it really? Can it be defined in terms of physical evidence? That is, is it some particle of matter that we could identify as such if we had the proper tools? Or, is it more nebulous, perhaps energy in the form of something akin to brain waves, or gravity or light?
A rumor is floating around the physics community that the world's largest atom smasher may have detected a long-sought subatomic particle called the known as the "God particle." The particle is predicted to exist by prevailing particle-physics theory, which is known as the Standard Model. Physicists think this particle bestows mass on all the other particles — but they supposedly have yet to confirm its existence.
In the search for such sub-atomic particles, huge atom smashers are being used and one detection experiment may have picked up a signature of the elusive particle. The signal is consistent, in mass and other characteristics, with what this particle is expected to produce. Researchers are urging patience and caution before we all head to church to repent our sins. So far, they say, it is only speculation, based upon theory, based upon an experiment, based upon an idea that might possibly be true.
The fact that “The God Particle” may have been discovered is causing a buzz in the scientific community. However, they are all being tight lipped about the potential discovery; when asked about the experiment, they just smile demurely and hum with a buzz.
That science is in fact looking for such evidence suggests to me that science is accepting the possibility that God does exist. One could even argue that the news is propitious, having been leaked to the press on the very eve of Easter.
Whatever it is all about, whatever comes of this discovery, one thing is certain: atheists and naysayers would be well advised to start shaking in their boots.
That’s MY AMERICAN OPINION, respectfully submitted.
